This project came into being when I accompanied yoga workshops taught by John Friend. I was greatly inspired by his masterful weaving of spiritual themes into the flow of the teachings. For the deep relaxation at the end of his classes, I composed pieces for Savasana combining ragas with sacred texts that mirrored these themes. In that spirit, the selections on this CD are intended to unite the central themes of ancient sacred texts with Indian ragas that support their essential nature. Raga is a tremendously sophisticated musical framework, which defies simple definition. Broadly, ragas are the traditional classical melodic form of Indian music, which express specific moods and reflect different seasons, times of day, and manifestations of the Divine. All One by Krishna Das
In early 2004 Krishna Das asked Walter Becker to work with him on an album that would include only one Chant / Mantra and would flow musically through various traditions in the style of a Suite. Walter, whose work with Steely Dan includes some of the seminal recordings of the last 50 years agreed and said 'Only someone with such a warped sense of humour like me would get into a crazy 'Hindu' scene like this.' Recorded in three days in November 2004 at Avatar Studios in New York, a choir of 70 and an orchestra of 20, Krishna Das (Vocals and Harmonium), Walter Becker (Bass/Co-producer), Def Leppard's Rick Allen (Drums), Ty Burhoe (Tabla) and David Nichtern (Guitar, Co-producer and well known composer 'Midnight at the Oasis').
