Greatest Hits of the Kali Yuga gathers tracks from all of KD's five previous CD's and includes a brand new track and a rarity or two. Also included in the package is a full length DVD documentary on Krishna Das “One Life At A Time” this traces his journey from his goal of attaining a basketball scholarship to aspiring rock singer (KD turned down the opportunity to be lead singer of Blue Oyster Cult in order to travel with Ram Dass) to becoming the 'chant master of American yoga'.
As he reflects in the film, 'I didn't even know there was a (spiritual) path never mind that I could be on it.' Together the CD and DVD present a full and captivating picture of the transformation of a seeker. It should be noted that prior to 1995 Krishna Das had no public persona. All the more remarkable then that this unassuming searcher would evolve into a conduit of Bhakti yoga tenets to allow others to relate to themselves. Door of Faith by Krishna Das
Door of Faith is Krishna Das first recording featuring original songs, invocations and Sanskrit prayers recorded with classical western instruments such as violin, cello, piano, trumpet, organ, acoustic guitar alongside traditional Indian instruments such as the esraj and harmonium. Produced by Rick Rubin (who also handled production duties on Krishna Das last recording, the acclaimed Breath of the Heart), Door of Faith is an intimate soul portrait of a man connected with his inner spirit. It is transforming in its depth of devotion.
Krishna Das past four records formed a foundation that prepared him and his audience for this transcendent recording. While the call and response participation of the audience lent itself to the live emotion of the classic Kirtan setting, the Door Of Faith sessions were recorded in the utmost intimacy in Rick Rubin's home enabling Krishna Das to create a personal space where he could forget about the recording process and connect with his personal God.
In the end Door of Faith is not only Krishna Das most personal recording to date but also a record that allows the listener into their own personal space whether practising yoga, meditating or decompressing from the stress of the work-a-day world. A Drop of the Ocean by Sultan Khan & Krishna Das
The collaboration between these two legendary, if somewhat distinct masters was born of Krishna Das' desire to work with Sultan Khan in the studio. Initially the plan was a Das produced Khan record of traditional bhajans (songs of devotion). That changed one day when Sultan Khan walked in the studio and said to Krishna Das 'OK, you sing'. Krishna Das laughed and declined. Khan looked at him and replied seriously 'Then I don't play'.
That day's collaboration resulted in the arresting track 'Song To The Goddess' featuring vocal call and response between Das and Khan. 'It is one thing to collaborate with a good musician' Das states somewhat awed, 'but this is one of the all time greats!' Throughout the course of the sessions Das continued the collaboration including adding readings of classic Hindu text over Khan's singularly emotive sarangi playing.
The result is as distinctive and unpredictable as it is moving and beautiful. Rounding off the cast of A Drop Of The Ocean is tabla player extraordinaire and Zakir Hussain protege Ty Burhoe, guitarist David Nichtern of the group Drala (and writer of the classic song 'Midnight at the Oasis') and long time Krishna Das musical associate keyboardist John McDowell.
